ImageJ

Introduction

ImageJ (http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/) is a package for "Image processing and analysis in Java". ImageJ and its Java source code are freely available and in the public domain. No license is required. ImageJ can be extended by developing plugins using ImageJ's built in text editor and Java compiler. More than 300 plugins are available.

Making animations

It reads tiff sequences and writes basic AVI files that can be read on all plattforms. Two steps, very easy. See instructions here. Basic AVI plugin included in standard release. With aditional plugins it can also export QuickTime, and animated GIF:
