Software installation
Windows
Included is a 64-bit system executable (Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 running on 64 bit machines). 32-bit systems are no longer supported.
Start the installation by double-clicking on the Huygens installer file. The installation procedure will start and guide you through the setup. For a basic installation it is sufficient to just accept all questions with the default answer.
When installing on Vista please make sure you have full Administrator rights. You may also need full Administrator rights when installing the Huygens license strings, see below.
Linux
There are two Linux distributions, (both 64 bit systems, for RPM and DEB packages). Recent versions are supported.
RedHat, Fedora or SuSE users, or users with another RPM-based Linux, should use one of the RPM installers.
Ubuntu users, or users with another Debian-based Linux, should use one of the DEB installers.
Log in as 'root' to your workstation or ask your system administrator to do so. On many systems installation can be performed by simply clicking the huygens .rpm or .deb file. Otherwise, open a shell and change directory (cd) to the location in which the Huygens distribution is present. Install with the commands:
- for RPM:
rpm -i --force huygens_package.rpm
- for DEB:
dpkg -i huygens_package.deb
Mac OSX
The Huygens Software is available for Intel based Apple computers Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), and Mavericks (10.9).
Note: Mac OS X 10.6 and its previous versions and version for PowerPC based Apple computers are not supported anymore.
Start the installation by double-clicking on the Huygens distribution file. If it is compressed, it will be extracted by "StuffIt Expander" to a .pkg file, which will be placed either in the same directory as the distribution file, or on the desktop. Double click this .pkg file, and follow the installation wizard.
Starting Huygens
On Windows, application icons are optionally installed on the desktop. Both in Windows and MacOS-X clicking the application file is enough to start the programs.
In Unix-like systems (Linux and MacOS-X) you can also launch the applications from a console (shell) by typing their names (if the application is included in PATH): essential
huygenspro
hucore
huscript
The path to the applications is /usr/local/bin
in Linux, and /Applications/SVI/bin
in MacOS-X.
For the Mac, also .remote
versions of the applications are available under /Applications/SVI/bin
to be executed remotely with X11.
Licensing
All packages on this CD are licensed software. Without a valid License String the software will run in freeware mode which means that only basic image processing functionality and some viewing tools are enabled.
To be able to fully use the restoration functions a valid license is required. This CD-ROM does NOT contain a license string.
You should have received a license string by email, regular mail or fax.
License strings are the same for all platforms and are based on the system ID as derived from the hardware ethernet address. The system ID can be read in Help > About. It looks like 1234-5678-90ab-def0
. We need this ID in order to generate a license for your system.
Installing a license string
After the program is installed a file named huygensLicense
is created in the application directory. Add the license string on a separate line in that file. For your convenience, you can do this using the embedded license tool in the Huygens programs.
First, copy the received license string to the clipboard. If received by email, you can do so within your email program.
Then, start one Huygens application (e.g. Essential), open Help > license, and select "Add new license ...". Select "paste", or use your system's paste key (control-v on Windows, apple-v on Mac, middle mouse button on Unix / Linux). Complete the procedure clicking on "Add license".
